Planning Ahead October 2005Planning Ahead: October 2005
How many times have you said to yourself, “I really ought to look into ----------for my future.” But then you are too busy, or you don’t want to just call someone out of the phonebook and subject yourself to the hard sell, or it just doesn’t seem like you need to do it yet. You can plug into the ----- any of the following: long term care insurance, wills, advance directives, home care, estate planning, alternate living arrangements, retirement plans and more.
We at the Senior Resource Center know that every adult needs to look at these issues, regardless of age. It can be really scary to look at the costs of care, or to face the fact that yes, all of us are aging and will more than likely need some kind of services or assistance. And the tough part is that no one has a crystal ball to know what exactly you will need. For whatever reason, many of us put off facing these decisions, until the options are very limited.
This weekend I went to visit my husband’s uncle in Washington DC. He is currently in a nursing home following surgery for a huge aneurysm. His kidneys have failed, and he has lost his appetite, but his mind is sharp. He didn’t seek help for his heart until he had excruciating pain. He’s a tough self-sufficient man from pioneer stock. Until a few months ago he was full-time caregiver to his wife who has advanced Alzheimer’s. Their children persuaded them it was time for her to move to a care facility when they found him carrying her up and down the stairs. They had talked about moving to a continuing care facility, or joining Livewell at home, or moving to Oregon where his siblings live in a retirement community. But then it was too late. Now he is in a nursing home that has on-site dialysis and she is in an Alzheimer’s care home about 15 miles away. Neither can travel. The caregiving adult child is 2 hours away. It was sad.
