Season of Giving December 2006
Season of Giving It is once again the season of giving, when we think about family, friends and the organizations that have shaped our lives or we hope will change the world. I recently attended an excellent lecture sponsored by the Princeton Area Community Foundation and PNC Bank. The featured speaker was Tracy Gary, an inspiring woman who has been a life-long philanthropist and founder of non-profits. She first addressed a group of local donors, and then a group of local non-profit leaders. Tracy made several points that have lingered with me. The first was that almost all of us are philanthropists. It is not a term restricted to those who give large amounts of money. Some of us give time, or modest amounts of money. But think about how those modest gifts add up over a lifetime. That total can effect change if directed thoughtfully. Tracy recommends that every donor identify your own values and priorities, and then see that your contributions support causes that are consistent with those values. The complimentary concept for us, the non-profit leaders, is to articulate our mission and work so that you, as donors, can see the way that what we do matches with your values and priorities. Tracy Gary’s book, Inspired Philanthropy, is available for borrowing from our library. Board and staff of PSRC are engaged in strategic planning, updating our mission, vision and plans for the coming years. We appreciate the compliments and suggestions that many of you have contributed through the focus group sessions. PSRC has a vision for the greater Princeton area that people will embrace aging as a normal and exciting part of life, filled with new experiences and new friends. The entire community, of all ages, will see PSRC as “the go to place” to get information and make connections with resources for aging and caregiver issues. Because of these resources, residents can make informed choices about their lives. There will be no hidden, isolated home-based seniors. No one will be without the basic services they require to be safe, comfortable and meet basic needs. The Suzanne Patterson Building will be the hub of activities where people enrich their lives through education, making social connections, and finding peer and professional support. It will feel welcoming and reflect this diverse community. There will be adequate transportation to get to our programs and health services. There will be adequate private and public support to ensure that people are not placed in residential care unnecessarily and that family caregivers are not overwhelmed. We are actively engaged in making this vision a reality. We hope that you will help us by including PSRC in your giving plan, through annual giving, bequests, and memorial donations. Thank you for your support. Susan W. Hoskins LCSW
